When You Don't Know What to Say

Some parenting moments require words we don't have. The Holy Spirit promises to help us find them — often in stillness rather than urgency.

My child looked up at me with tears in her eyes after a hard day at school, and I had nothing. No lecture, no fix, no perfect line. Just a couch, a silence, and a prayer I barely knew how to pray.

It is tempting to believe that good parenting means always having the right response ready. But the Spirit's promise is not that we will be eloquent. It is that we will be led.

Sometimes the most Spirit-filled thing I can do is close my mouth, open my heart, and wait. In that waiting, I am often surprised by what rises: a question, a hug, a simple "I'm sorry that happened." The right words rarely arrive when I am rushing to fill the space. They arrive when I make room.

Questions for reflection

  • Where do I feel pressure to have all the answers?
  • What might change if I asked the Holy Spirit to give me the right words instead of producing them myself?
